Pumpplecake

IMG_0684

This year for Thanksgiving, my husband (who is not a dessert person) haaaaad to have pumpplecake. He just had to special order it, which means I had to drive to Center City on the day before Thanksgiving in a rainstorm to pick it up.

So, what is pumpplecake?!? That’s what everyone’s been asking. This “turducken of desserts” is a two-layer cake made by Flying Monkey Bakery in the Reading Terminal Market. One layer features an apple pie baked into a vanilla cake, and the second layer is a chocolate cake with a pumpkin pie baked inside. These two layers are sandwiched together and topped with vanilla buttercream.

The verdict is still out on tastiness (we will find out soon and let you know), but it is a conversation piece if nothing else. It was even featured recently on Food & Wine: http://www.foodandwine.com/slideshows/new-ways-to-eat-pie/14

If you’re curious, but not brave enough to order a whole cake, you can buy it by the slice for $8.

Well, Matt and a few others seemed to like it. Aside from the novelty, I was not impressed. I thought the cake and icing were too dry.
