Iron Chef Battle Philadelphia

Iron Chef Jose Garces

On Sunday’s episode of Iron Chef America it was a Philly vs. Philly battle as Iron Chef Jose Garces (of Amada, Tinto, Chifa, Distrito, Village Whiskey, Garces Trading Co., and JG Domestic) took on Michael Solomonov (of Zahav, Percy St. Barbecue and Xochitl).

With the secret ingredient being passion fruit, both chefs came up with some interesting dishes, but nothing I was dying to try. I know I’ve had passionfruit-flavored drinks before, but I’ve never actually seen the fruit itself. It appeared to be similar to a pomagranate, with edible seeds, although the judges did not care for them and called out both chefs for incorporating seeds into some dishes.

The problem with fruits of this sort is that there really is no flesh, so you’re working with mainly juice. Thus, we saw passion fruit tuna carpaccio, passion fruit ceviche, passion fruit marinated lamb and passion fruit custard.

In the end, Garces prevailed and improved his record as an iron Chef to 5 wins and 2 losses. By the way, did you realize there are three Iron Chefs with restaurants in Philadelphia? Garces, of course, Bobby Flay (Bobby’s Burger Palace), and Masaharu Morimoto (Morimoto).
